Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Represents Pakistan at the Fourth Nuclear Security Summit in Washington D.C.

Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minster on Foreign Affairs, led Pakistan’s delegation to the fourth Nuclear Security Summit (NSS), held in Washington D.C. from March 31 to April 01, 2016. He was assisted by Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary, Pakistan’s Ambassador in Washington Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani and other senior officials.

2. Launched in 2009, the NSS process is President Barack Obama’s initiative to raise awareness at the world leaders’ level about threats to nuclear security and the need for appropriate national measures and international cooperation to effectively address them. A total of 52 countries and four international organizations were represented at the Washington Summit.

3. Pakistan has been an active participant in the process. The process has served as a platform for Pakistan to showcase its stringent national nuclear security architecture and to project itself as a nuclear power that remains fully alive to its responsibilities.

4. During the run up to the Summit, Pakistan participated closely in the negotiations of the outcome documents which were adopted at the Summit. These include a leaders’ Communiqué and associated action plans in support of various international organizations and initiatives to provide guidelines for future work.

5. In his interventions at the Summit, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister provided Pakistan’s perspective on nuclear security, highlighted national measures undertaken in this regard that have won international recognition and underscored Pakistan’s strong credentials for full integration into the multilateral non-proliferation regimes as an equal partner. Another important highlight of his remarks was Pakistan’s recent ratification of the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, which signals Pakistan’s commitment to the objective of nuclear security.

6. Pakistan also released a National Statement at the Summit that provides detailed updates on its national approach and the related measures adopted to enhance nuclear security.
