Participation of Pakistan in the 2nd Globe Climate Legislation Summit at Washington DC

Pakistan joined today the delegations of sixty other countries from across the globe at the opening session of the 2nd Globe Climate Legislation Summit at Washington DC. Led by the Deputy Chairman Senate, Senator Sabir Ali Baluch, Pakistan delegation included Ms. Mariam Aurangzeb, MNA, Mr. Muhammad Tallal Badar, MNA and Mr. Muhammad Shahbaz Babar Choudhry, MNA.

The 2nd Globe Climate Legislation Summit is being organized by the UK-based Globe International on 27-28 February to launch the Global Climate Legislation Study spearheaded by the Globe International to strengthen and consolidate the national efforts on climate change legislations in order to build international consensus on global climate change targets.

Convened in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room at the Senate Building, the High Level Segment of the Summit was chaired and moderated by the US Senator Edward Markey.

In the country presentations during the High Level Segment, Member National Assembly of Pakistan Ms. Mariam Aurangzeb highlighted the several policy initiatives undertaken by the Government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to address the challenges of climate change. Recalling the severe floods and changed patterns of precipitation adversely impacting Pakistan, Ms. Aurangzeb informed the audience that the newly established Climate Change Division in Islamabad was coordinating the national efforts and had launched a target oriented Work Program for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Pakistan since February 2014 to implement the National Climate Change Policy of 2013. Ms. Aurangzeb stressed that the government was not only committed to improve the existing legislation on climate change but was also taking measures to strengthen its implementation and monitoring mechanism as a key priority involving the research institutions, civil society as well as media. Pakistan is also working on increasing the carbon financing CDM projects and had recently adopted REDD+ projects across the country, Ms. Mariam emphasized.

Earlier, several prominent speakers including the House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Member UK Parliament Rt. Honored John Gummer, UN Assistant Secretary General Dr. Robert Orr and President Obama’s Special Envoy for climate change Todd Stern also addressed the summit. The Conference will address the issue of Climate Finance on its second day and the discussions will continue at the World Bank premises.
