Message from Dr. Arif Alvi, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the occasion of Labour Day 1 May, 2019

This year we are celebrating May Day with the resolve to reaffirm our commitment to the dignity of labour and to pay tribute to the valiant and heroic struggle of the workers for their fundamental rights. This day is not only a reminder of the struggle of workers but also an acknowledgement of their importance for national growth and progress.

We believe that workers and employers are partners in the production process and their cooperation is essential for industrial efficiency and ultimately for socio-economic development of the country.

The Government has launched Ehsas Programme to address issues faced by workers. The objectives of the Programme are to eliminate exploitation of labour and to ensure respect for their rights with regard to wages, health and safety. I am confident that under the present regime the rights of workers will be effectively protected to help them meet emerging challenges of globalization. I am also confident that the Government will do its utmost to ameliorate and improve the socio-economic conditions of workers. I also urge the Provincial Government to accelerate their efforts to protect the rights of the workers.

On this occasion, I urge workers and employers of the country to come forward and play their role in making Pakistan a symbol of efficiency, cooperation and progress–a country which is looked up to with respect at the international level for observing fundamental rights.

On this day, let us all pray and once again pledge to dedicate ourselves for the prosperity and glory of Pakistan.
