Ambassador Rehman’s meeting with Senator Robert Menendez, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Ambassador Sherry Rehman, on 12 February 2013, met with Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) who is the new Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator Menendez has replaced former Senator John Kerry after his appointment as Secretary of State.

In her first interaction with Senator Menendez, Ambassador Rehman briefed the Senator about the recent developments in the bilateral track and assured him of continued engagement with the new Congress to take the relationship to an upward trajectory. Ambassador Rehman also apprised the Senator about the forthcoming election process and the first peaceful transition of the democratic government in Pakistan.

Matters of mutual interest including situation in Afghanistan, reconciliation process, Pakistan’s efforts to normalize relations with India were also discussed. Senator Menendez acknowledged Pakistan’s role in stabilizing the region and assistance to the Afghan government in the reconciliation process.

Senator Menendez also informed Ambassador Rehman that he was looking forward to visiting Pakistan in the near future and hoped to meet with Pakistani leadership as well as members of Parliament in building a personal relationship.
